A shed is perceived as a tranquil idyll for men – traditionally,to get away from the woman’s area (the house) into their own domain where they can rule the roost.  And of course while in the shed, the man (as men do) would make something useful that could be used in the house or around the house.

There is one major gripe about shed plans products and that is that some of the shed plans and other items offered in the package can be found elsewhere on the web! That would surely not be news to anyone who is even vaguely acquainted with the internet.  So while some people complain about this, others recognize that not everyone wants to spend hours tracking the plans down.  Some people are perfectly happy to pay for someone having researched it all and have created a package where all the plans in one place.

Another gripe is about the volume of shed plans.  People are saying that no one can use thousands and thousands of plans.  I’d say they are right, but it is also reasonable to assume that having a range and choice of plans gives just about everyone at least something they may like to make.

While someone may want free shed plans, perhaps someone else is looking for barn plans.  It’s hard to imagine that anyone would want to build all of the items contained in the packages – but I may be wrong about this!  Maybe there are incredibly keen people out there who spend all their time making things from wood.  If so, it’s highly likely that those people are quite proficient at woodworking and perhaps are unlikely to need the assistance of shed plans, barn plans or any other plans.

The above comments relate to My Shed Plans.  There were not nearly as many comments out there for Teds Woodworking so I assume more people are happier with this product.  The comments I did see seemed to be from people promoting the website so I haven’t included them here.  But of course you can check the product out for yourself.

It is worth pointing out that in 2009 Teds Woodworking won The Woodworking Association’s Readers Choice Award (a huge American association for woodworking with chapters around the country).

Seriously though, when purchasing shed plans or anything from the web, it pays to do your research.  If you research both these products you will be in a position to make up your own mind about whether you would like to buy or not.  It’s totally up to you, no one is forcing your hand.

I know if I had a shed available on a piece of land somewhere I would be very tempted to give it to Mens Sheds.  Their work is a life saver and a life changer for many men who would otherwise have little contact with other men.

Each of the Mens Shedsare designed to be self-funding once they start up.  It means the members need to produce material that they can sell, or fundraise – both.  Naturally, this keeps members busy and focused, but more importantly it helps and encourages the development of new physical skills as well as emotional skills.

Woodworking seems to be a dying art and any opportunity to build or create more things ourselves is a great use of resource, skill and time.  I remember my grandfather’s shed as a treasure trove of machinery, smells of oil and straw and a lovely comfortable feeling reflecting my grandfather’s calming personality.

One way individuals in a community can help the Mens Shed cause, is to create your own Mens Shed environment.  Building your own shed is not a huge task, although of course implementing large shed plans may take some commitment and money!

Shed Building Shaped Like A Hobbit’s House

Going through some other post of the same interest as mine, I came across this person who was handy with some carpentry tool or two and decided to build some sort of playhouse / shed building / garden shed shaped like a hobbit’s house straight from Middle Earth. It’s mostly a small circular building made of wood so artistically designed that it just made me want to have one for myself.

Now, shed building is normally a one story structure found on the backyard. There are many kinds and may have more than one function. It can be primarily be utilized for storing small and large equipments, as an office or as a workshop or all of the above. The hobbit’s hole I saw though can also be a brilliant playhouse for the little ones. Now that is truly what I would call multi-functional and fun all rolled into one.

Now after seeing this amazing, startling piece of wood work, your hands are just probably itching to create something like this, right? Building Pergolas With Free Shed Plans

Generally, pressure-treated wood as well as cedar and redwood are amongst the most popular materials used for pergola. Cedar is often favored for a lot of outdoor construction because, like shed building, it has a straight grain quality and does not easily deform or bend. It is ideal for all kinds of weather as it does not deteriorate as easily as other wood.

Pergolas can be constructed in several ways. There is the free standing style or one that is attached to the wall of your house, shed building or deck. It is common to utilize the lean-to style of support if the pergola is attached to the house or other outdoor structure. Pergolas can also be boxed arches where you see a winding path beyond it.

The fundamentally common design is one with four posts and four beams that connect at the top. One of the main concerns in building pergolas is its capacity to bear the weight of the plants growing and increasing on its beams. This is not a cause for concern for those vines and plants that are light in weight but for some vines like wisteria, make sure the construction is sufficiently strong to withstand the heavier weight.

Types of Roof for Shed Building

Gable Roof – this has a duo-pitch roof truss that is simple and easy. By elevating the bottom chord of the truss, an elevated collar truss is formed which gives more headroom or some storage. The roof can have different angles from the normal 20 degree angle to a 70 degree one for those roofs with a much higher pitch.

Pent Roof – is considered the simplest of roof designs. The single slant of this roof is well matched with that of a shed building that is against the wall. There is simple beam which spans from the front going to the back walls. The angle would depend on the covering materials used.

Hip Roof – hip roof is similar to the gable design however the end wall slants in. This makes the four faces of the hip roof rise towards the ridge. The slanting style of this roof prevents things from being stored in the roof but perks up the whole appearance of the shed.

Gambrel roof – this gained some importance at the time of the Dutch Colonial Architecture. This roof style allows for storage of tools and machinery at the bottom part and turns upstairs into a hayloft.

Last is the salt box – this is said to have been derived from the fisherman’s shed and known for being just a simple shed building design that can resist strong winds.
